The Voice That Says They Would Be Better Off Without You

A man on his own front steps at first light with a phone to his ear as someone answers, shoulders easing, in the dark cinematic style of the series, with the words "The Voice That Says They Would Be Better Off Without You" set across the graphic.

If that thought is loud right now, read the numbers at the bottom of this first, then come back. They connect you to a real person, any time, day or night. You do not have to be at the edge to use them. You just have to be tired.

There is a voice that shows up when a man is worn all the way down, and it does not scream. That is what makes it dangerous. It speaks calmly. It sounds reasonable. It tells you, gently, like it is on your side, that the people you love would be better off if you were not here. That you are a weight on them. That your absence would be a mercy to the ones carrying you.

I need to tell you exactly what that voice is, because naming it takes some of its power away.

It is not your conscience. It is not God. It is not a level-headed assessment of the facts. It is a lie, and it has an author, and Jesus told you who he is.

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly."

John 10:10, NASB 1995

Read what the thief is after. Not your improvement. Not your family's good. He comes to steal, and to kill, and to destroy, and that is his entire purpose, full stop. So when a voice tells you the ones you love would be better off without you, consider the source. That is the thief, doing the one thing he came to do, and he is dressing it up as kindness so you will not notice it is a knife. He always lies about the total. The math he is showing you is rigged, because the man running the numbers wants you dead.

Now let me tell you the truth the thief is working so hard to keep you from.

You are not an accident that the people around you have to absorb. You were made, on purpose, by God.

"God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them."

Genesis 1:27, NASB 1995

You bear the image of God. That is not a thing you earned and it is not a thing your worst season can revoke. It was stamped into you when you were made, and it is still there tonight, under all the exhaustion, whether you can feel it or not. And you were not mass-produced. You were formed, by hand, on purpose.

"For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother's womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well."

Psalm 139:13-14, NASB 1995

The God who wove you together did not make a mistake He now needs you to correct. Your life is not a math problem with an obvious solution. It is a work of His hands, and He does not throw His work away, and He does not agree with the voice telling you the world would balance out better without you in it. That voice is not telling you what God thinks. God already told you what He thinks: fearfully and wonderfully made.

And here is where God is standing in relation to you right now, in the exact condition you are in.

"The LORD is near to the brokenhearted And saves those who are crushed in spirit."

Psalm 34:18, NASB 1995

Not far off. Near. The crushing you feel, the thing the voice is trying to use against you, is the very thing that has God close. He is nearest to the man who is most sure he is too far gone to be near anyone. You feel like the last person anyone should have to deal with. You are, at this moment, exactly the person God has drawn close to.

And if you belong to Christ, hear what He says about how tightly you are held, because it does not depend on your grip tonight.

"and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand."

John 10:28, NASB 1995

No one. Not the thief. Not the voice. Not your worst night. You are held in the hand of Christ, and the strength keeping you there was never your strength. You do not have to hold on hard enough tonight. He is holding you, and His grip does not fail when yours does.

So here is what I am asking you to do, and it is not to feel better, and it is not to be strong, and it is not to fix everything.

It is to tell someone. Tonight. Out loud.

The voice wants you silent and alone, because it only works in isolation, and it loses the second you say it to another human being. So break the isolation. Call one of the numbers below and talk to a real person. Text a friend and tell him you are not okay. Wake your wife up. Call your pastor. You do not owe anyone a polished explanation. "I am in a bad place and I need to not be alone right now" is enough. That one sentence is a faithful, courageous thing, not a weak one.

If you are thinking about ending your life, reach out right now:

  • 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: call or text 988, any time. Someone real answers.
  • Veterans Crisis Line: dial 988, then press 1, or text 838255.
  • If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

You do not have to be certain to make the call. You do not have to have a plan or be at the edge. Tired and worn down is reason enough. Make it.

You are not a burden to be subtracted so the numbers come out better. That is the thief talking, and he lies about the total every single time.

You are a man made in the image of God, woven together by His own hands, held in the hand of Christ where nothing can snatch you, and near, right now, to a God who saves the crushed in spirit.

The people who love you do not need you gone. They need you here.

Stay. Make the call. Let someone sit with you in the dark tonight. The morning is closer than the voice wants you to believe, and you are not walking to it alone.

Written by Jake. If this hit home, write me or start with a prayer.
