What Jake reads

Book Reviews

Books I read. Books worth your time.

I’ll call it straight, either way.

I don’t hand out fives. This one earned it. No fluff, no filler — every chapter is a man telling you the truth and trusting you to handle it. I read it in three sittings and went back with a pencil.

Why it’s worth reading

Because it says the hard thing plainly, then shows you what to do about it. Rare on both counts.

Second recommendation to come

Strong book. The middle sags a bit — too many stories, not enough marrow — but the first and last third are worth the cover price alone. I’ve quoted chapter 2 to three different men this month.

Why it’s worth reading

If your prayer life is running on fumes, this will put fuel in the tank without making you feel preached at.

Third recommendation to come

by Author to come

This is a slow read, and that’s the point. One chapter at a time, morning coffee, let it sit. I didn’t agree with everything. Didn’t need to. It made me pray more, which is the only test that matters.

Why it’s worth reading

Built for the man who wants depth without a seminary degree. Keep it on the nightstand, not the shelf.

Fourth recommendation to come

by Author to come

Good bones, too much polish. The author has clearly lived it, but the editing sanded off the scars. Still — two chapters in here are as honest as anything I’ve read this year, and honesty covers a lot.

Why it’s worth reading

Read it for chapters 4 and 9. Skim the rest without guilt.
