John’s Old Testament
Revelation never once says as it is written. It quotes nothing and alludes constantly. This walks the book front to back and names what John is reaching for at each point, with a confidence tier on every line, because the disagreement about how many allusions exist is really a disagreement about where to stop counting.
How to read this
The Greek tracks the Septuagint, or a known Hebrew rendering, closely enough that the source is not in question. Revelation never writes “as it is written,” so this is verbal density rather than a citation formula.
Distinctive shared imagery or phrasing that a competent first-century reader would have caught, but not quotation. The bulk of the book lives here.
Thematic, general, and genuinely arguable. This is the tier where scholars part company, and where every disputed row sits.
A row’s tier is carried by ink weight as well as by the letter in the last column, so you can see how solid a stretch of the book is before you read a word of it. Rows marked (disputed) carry a live disagreement in the literature.
Published counts run from 394 in UBS3 to about 635 in NA26, and past 1,000 by the loosest criteria. Beale puts it at 278 of Revelation’s 404 verses containing an Old Testament reference. That spread is not a factual dispute. It is a definitional one, which is why there is a tier column here instead of a single number.
Drop tier C and this table reads 560, which is where most published figures sit. Keep only tier A and it reads 219, and almost nobody argues with those.
Wording was checked against the NASB 1995. Where a link is visible only in the Greek and not in an English translation, the note says so. Rev 20:11 is the clearest case: Theodotion’s Daniel 2:35 reads word for word with Revelation, while the NASB renders the Aramaic “not a trace of them was found.”
Two structural notes worth more than any single row. Revelation 21:9 through 22:5 follows Ezekiel 40 to 48 in sequence, not as scattered imagery: the high mountain, the man with the measuring rod, the gates named for the tribes, the glory filling the house, the exclusion of the unclean, the river from the sanctuary, and the city’s name.
And Revelation 13 collapses Daniel 7’s four sequential beasts into one. That fusion is itself the interpretive act, which is why the whole chapter reads as one long argument with Daniel rather than a set of borrowings.
