God Already Knew You Would Disappoint Him

Here is the lie that keeps a man on the ground after he falls.

He thinks he surprised God.

He blew it again, the same way he always blows it, and somewhere underneath the shame is this idea that God is up there stunned, disappointed, rethinking the whole thing. Like God took a chance on him and just found out it was a mistake. So the man hides. He stays down. He stops praying, because who wants to face the disappointment in the room.

I want to take that lie apart, because it is a lie, and it is keeping you from the one place that could actually get you up.

God already knew.

He knew before you did it. He knew before you were born. When He set His love on you, He was not looking at the cleaned-up version of you He hoped you would become. He was looking at the whole thing, every failure with the dates on it, the sin you have not even committed yet, and He chose you anyway, with all of it in full view.

That is not me being poetic. That is what the word "foreknew" means.

"For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren."

Romans 8:29, NASB 1995

Read the order of it. He foreknew you, and then He predestined you. He knew you completely, first, and knowing you completely, He set you on a path anyway. And look where the path goes. To become conformed to the image of His Son. That is a process. That is a man being slowly made like Christ over a whole lifetime, which means failure is not the thing that ends the plan. Failure is the raw material the plan works on. You cannot be "being conformed" and also be "already finished," and God never expected the finished man from you today. He is making him. That takes time, and it takes a lot of getting back up.

So no, you did not surprise Him. He has known about this exact day since before there was a you. And He did not choose you in spite of not knowing. He chose you while knowing. There is nothing you can reveal to God about yourself that will change His mind, because there is nothing about you He did not already have on the table when He decided to want you.

And here is the part that should break the shame for good. He did not just foresee your weakness and shrug. He armed you for it.

"Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil."

Ephesians 6:11, NASB 1995

Think about who gets handed armor. Not a man God expects to win on his own. You do not give armor to someone you think is strong enough without it. God handed you a full set of armor because He knew, ahead of time, that you were walking into a fight you could not survive bare-handed. The armor itself is proof of what He knew about you. He knew you were weak for this. He knew the schemes were coming and that you would not be enough. And instead of walking away from a man He knew would struggle, He knelt down and outfitted him for the war.

That is not a God who is disappointed and backing out. That is a God who saw the whole fight in advance, knew you would take hits, knew you would go down some days, and provided for all of it before you ever laced up.

So put the two together, because that is the whole gospel for a man on the ground. He foreknew you, failures and all, and chose you anyway. And He armed you, because He knew you could not do it alone and He had no intention of making you. Foreknowledge that ends in provision. That is what you are actually dealing with. Not a God waiting to be let down. A God who already counted the cost of you and paid it with His eyes open.

He still wants you. Not the future version. You, today, on the day you blew it, with the shame still wet. That is not the man He tolerates. That is the man He came for. The whole reason there is a cross is that God decided a long time ago that a people full of failures was worth dying to keep, and He does not lose the ones He keeps.

So get up. Not because you have earned the right to, but because the One who already knew every reason you would give for staying down has told you plainly that none of them disqualify you. You are not a disappointment He is stuck with. You are a son He chose with the full file open.

Stop hiding from a God who already knows. Come back to the One who saw all of it and wanted you anyway. He is not surprised. He is not done. And He is still, right now, holding out the armor to a man He never expected to fight without it.
