They Hate You Because They Hated Him First
You feel it, even if you have never put words to it.
The eye-roll when your faith comes up. The way a room cools when they find out you actually believe this, not the polite cultural version but the real thing. The mockery online, where saying you are a Christian and you mean it draws a kind of contempt almost nothing else does. The quiet pressure to keep it to yourself, tone it down, not be one of those people.
A lot of Christian men are secretly rattled by this. They expected the world to at least respect a man trying to do right, and instead they got sneered at, and it made them go quiet. If that is you, I want to hand you the one thing that changes how you carry all of it. It is not a strategy. It is a sentence from Jesus, and He said it so you would not be blindsided.
"If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you."
John 15:18 through 19, NASB 1995
Read it slowly, because it reframes the whole thing.
First, He said IF the world hates you, but He meant when. He was not raising a possibility. He was preparing you for a certainty, the same way a father tells his son ahead of time what is coming so it does not knock him flat.
Second, and this is the part that takes the sting out: it was never about you. They hated Him first. The contempt you catch is not really aimed at your personality or your manners or how you said it. It is aimed at the One you belong to, and it is landing on you because you are His. You walked into the middle of a fight that started long before you got here. Christ took the world's full hatred on a cross. What reaches you is the runoff.
Third, and hear this one, He turned it into evidence. The world loves its own. So if the world is comfortable with you, if you never once feel the friction, that is not the win it feels like. It might mean you have blended in so well the world has mistaken you for one of its own. The friction, the coolness, the sense that you do not quite fit anymore, that is not a sign something is wrong with your witness. It can be a sign it is working. He said the hatred comes because I chose you out of the world. The pushback is proof you got chosen and pulled out.
So let me tell you what to do with it, because knowing why it happens is only half.
Stop being surprised. You are not owed the world's applause, and chasing it will cost you your spine. Jesus told you plainly this was coming, so when it comes, the right response is not shock or hurt feelings. It is recognition. Oh. This. He said this would happen.
Stop going quiet to buy peace. This is where most men fold. Not in a dramatic denial, just a slow, quiet dimming. They stop mentioning it. They let the joke slide. They edit themselves down until nobody could tell what they actually believe. That is not wisdom, it is fear wearing wisdom's coat, and it is the exact opposite of a man who was chosen out of the world to stand in it. You do not have to be obnoxious. You do have to stop disappearing.
And do not hate them back. This is the hard turn, and it is the Christian one. The people sneering at you are not your enemy, remember that. They are people the darkness has, the same darkness that had you once. You were on the other side of this not long ago. So you carry the hatred the way He did, without returning it, praying for the ones dishing it out, refusing to become bitter and small in response. The world hating you is not permission to hate the world. It is a chance to look exactly like the One they hated first.
Here is where it lands. You are going to be disliked for this. Maybe more as the years go. And every bit of it, when you understand it right, is not a reason to shrink. It is a strange kind of confirmation that you are His, pulled out of the world, walking in the runoff of a hatred He already absorbed at the cross.
So stand up straight. Do not be shocked, do not go quiet, do not hate them back. They hated Him first, they will hate you for the same reason, and that reason is the best news about you there is: you are not of the world, because He chose you out of it.
Before you go
