How To Pray Right Now

You don’t need the right words.

If you are here because you do not know how to pray, read this first. You do not need the right words. There is no special language and there is no secret to it. God is not grading your grammar. Prayer is not a performance and it was never a test. It is a man talking to his Father, and a father does not need his son to say it perfectly. He just wants him to speak.

You can pray the prayers on this page word for word. Say them out loud or say them in your head. Or read one until it turns into your own words, and then say those. Either way is prayer. A groan is prayer. “God, help me” is a whole prayer. And when you cannot find any words at all, the Spirit carries what you cannot say. “The Spirit also helps our weakness... the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words” (Romans 8:26, NASB 1995).

So stop trying to get it right. Just start. Find the one that matches where you are, and pray it now.

Or just start reading, right here.

When you’re afraid

God, I am afraid. I am not going to pretend I am not. My chest is tight and my mind will not stop and I do not know how this turns out. I am bringing the fear to You because I cannot carry it and I am done trying. “When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You” (Psalm 56:3, NASB 1995). I am trusting You. Hold me steady. Amen.

When you can’t sleep

God, it is late and I am still awake, and everything feels louder in the dark. My mind keeps running the same track. I cannot fix any of it tonight. So I am handing it to You and lying down anyway. “In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for You alone, O LORD, make me to dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8, NASB 1995). Quiet me. Let me rest. Amen.

When shame says you’re too far gone

God, I have done things I cannot take back, and the shame tells me I am past saving. I do not feel clean and I do not feel worthy. But I am not coming to You on my record. I am coming on Jesus. You said it Yourself: “there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1, NASB 1995). So make that true over me tonight. Wash it off. Take me back. Amen.

When it’s all falling apart

God, it is coming apart in my hands and I cannot hold it together. The money, the marriage, the thing I have been dreading, all of it at once. I have run out of my own strength. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1, NASB 1995). Be that for me right now. I am not asking You to make it easy. I am asking You to be here and to hold me while it shakes. Amen.

Right before you lose your temper

God, I can feel it rising and I am about to do damage. Give me three seconds. Slow my mouth and my hands. Make me quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, right now, before I say the thing I cannot unsay. Guard the people in this house from the worst of me. Amen.

Over your kids

God, these kids are Yours before they are mine, and I am scared of getting it wrong. Cover them where I cannot. Where I have already failed them, heal it. Make me the kind of man they can follow toward You. And when they are grown and I am not in the room, keep Your hand on them. Do not let them go. Amen.

For your wife

God, I have not loved her the way You told me to. I have been distant, or hard, or just absent while I was sitting right there in the room. Teach me to love her the way Christ loved the church, out front, sacrificing, giving Himself up for her, all in. Soften what has gone hard between us. Give me the humility to go first. She is a gift. Help me carry her like one. Amen.

When you can’t feel God

God, I cannot feel You. I say the words and they hit the ceiling. I do not know if I did something or if You just feel far, but You feel far. I am going to trust what You said over what I feel. You promised You would never leave me or forsake me. So I am standing on that in the dark. Do not let go of me, even when I cannot sense Your hand. Amen.

When it’s good

God, thank You. Not for what I can get out of it, just thank You. For the breath in my chest, and people who love me, and another day I did not earn. I forget to say it when things are fine, so I am saying it now. “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits” (Psalm 103:2, NASB 1995). You have been good to me. I see it. Thank You. Amen.

That is prayer. You just did it. It does not have to be long and it does not have to be pretty. Talk to Him like this every day, in the truck, on the job, before your feet hit the floor, and watch what it does to a man over time.
