The Prayer You Cannot Get Out
There is a kind of low where you cannot even pray.
You know you should. You want to, somewhere under all of it. But you go to open your mouth, or just to form the words in your head, and nothing comes. The tank is empty. You cannot find a sentence, cannot find a request, cannot even find the energy to be sorry the way you think you are supposed to be. You just sit there in the quiet with a chest full of something you cannot say.
And then, because you are already a man who is good at this, you add it to the list. Now you cannot even pray right. What kind of Christian cannot manage to pray. One more thing you are failing at.
Put that down. Because the God you are trying and failing to reach built the whole thing knowing you would end up exactly here, with nothing to say, and He made a provision for this precise moment.
"In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words."
Romans 8:26, NASB 1995
Read what Paul actually says there, because it is not what you would expect. He does not say, we ought to learn to pray better. He does not say, try harder to find the words. He starts from the assumption that you do not know how to pray as you should, and then he tells you the answer, and the answer is not you. The Spirit Himself steps in. When you have run all the way out of words, there is Someone inside you who takes your wordless groan and carries it up, in language too deep for words, straight to the Father. The prayer you cannot get out is being prayed for you, right now, from inside your own chest, by God Himself.
So the groan is not a failed prayer. The groan is the prayer. It just has a better translator than you.
And do not think for a second that a prayer without words is a prayer without power. Go back and watch how God's people got rescued the first time.
"So God heard their groaning; and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob."
Exodus 2:24, NASB 1995
Israel was in slavery in Egypt, ground down, generations deep in it. And the text does not say they prayed a beautiful prayer. It says they groaned. They sighed under the weight and cried out, and their groaning rose up to God, and God heard it, and God moved. He remembered His covenant and He came down and He got them out. All of it, the plagues, the sea splitting, the whole rescue, started with a people too crushed to do anything but groan. The groan was heard. The groan moved heaven. And if a groan under Egypt could reach God and pull an entire nation out of bondage, the groan you cannot even get out of your chest tonight is not too small for Him either.
Here is the tender part, the one I most want you to hold onto.
"Lord, all my desire is before You; And my sighing is not hidden from You."
Psalm 38:9, NASB 1995
My sighing is not hidden from You. The sigh you cannot turn into a sentence, He already sees the whole of it. The thing you cannot explain, the ache you could not put into words if you tried, is not lost on Him and it is not hidden from Him. Before you find the language, He already has the meaning. You do not have to make it clear. He is not waiting on you to articulate it. He reads the sigh.
So let me take one weight off you, because I think it is the wrong weight and you have been carrying it a long time.
Prayer was never a performance you had to get right. It is not a speech you deliver to a God who grades the delivery. It is a child getting to climb into his Father's lap, and sometimes a child does not have words either. Sometimes a hurting kid just crawls up and buries his face and cannot say anything at all, and no father alive would call that a failure. He would just hold him. That is what is happening when you cannot pray. You are not failing to reach God. You are a son with his face buried, and the Father is holding him, and the Spirit is saying the words the son cannot find.
So here is what I want you to do tonight, and it is almost nothing, which is the point.
Stop trying to build the right prayer. Just groan. Just say the one word you can manage, even if the only word you have is His name. God. That is a whole prayer. He does not need the paragraph. He needs the man, and you are already there, already turned toward Him, already reaching, even if all that comes out is a breath.
You do not have to get the prayer out.
Someone inside you is getting it out for you, and the Father hears every syllable of it, including the ones you could not say.
Written by Jake. If this hit home, write me or start with a prayer.
