Understanding Scripture
Things the Bible Never Said
Everybody carries around a few Bible verses that turn out not to be in the Bible. Some came from a hymn. Some from a poet. Some are real verses wearing a costume.
None of this is a gotcha. Most of these lines get repeated by good people who love God and are trying to help. But a saying that sounds biblical and isn't can quietly steer a man wrong, and it usually does its worst work on a hard day. So this series takes seven of the most common ones, says plainly where each really came from, and puts the actual Scripture back in its place.
The real thing is almost always better than the version we carry. Start anywhere.

Follow Your Heart
Half the movies you have seen preach it, and most people assume it is in the Bible somewhere. It is not. On this one the Bible does not stay quiet, it hands you a warning, and it turns out to be more freeing than it first sounds.

God Helps Those Who Help Themselves
If you polled a room, this is the line most people would guess is a Bible verse. It is not close to one. It comes from Aesop and Ben Franklin, and once you see what it actually teaches, it is the one on this list I most want to pull out by the roots.

Everything Happens for a Reason
It is what people say when they do not know what to say. It is meant as comfort and usually lands as a small wound. It is not a Bible verse, and the real thing Scripture offers is far gentler than the slogan.

Three Wise Men at the Manger
The Christmas card shows three crowned kings kneeling at the manger the night Jesus was born. The Bible says almost none of that. Here is what Matthew actually tells us, and why the real scene is bigger and better than the tidy one.
