A letter to the man who is…

A Letter to the Man Who Is Starting Over

Brother,

So you're at day one again.

Not the good kind. Not the January kind with a new notebook and a plan. The kind where the paperwork got signed, or the bottle won, or the discharge is final, or the account is empty, and everybody else's life kept moving while yours got taken down to the studs.

Maybe you're the one who blew it up. Maybe somebody blew it up on you. Maybe you honestly can't tell anymore, and you're too tired to sort it out.

Here's what nobody warns you about. Starting over doesn't feel like a beginning. It feels like standing in a house with no walls, holding a hammer, hoping nobody drives by and sees you like this.

Day one is still a day. It counts. God counts it even when nobody else does.

I'm not writing this to shame you. You've got that covered already, and shame is a lousy foreman. It'll keep you standing in the wreckage measuring it instead of clearing it.

And if you're the one who blew it up, say so. Out loud, to the person you did it to, with no explanation hung on the end of it. That isn't groveling. That's the first wall going back up.

Now hear the part men get wrong. If you belong to Christ, your standing with God did not reset when your life did. You lost ground you'll have to walk back. You did not lose Him.

Micah knew exactly whose fault his ruin was, and he still wrote this down: “Though I fall I will rise; Though I dwell in darkness, the LORD is a light for me.” (Micah 7:8)

Read it again. He doesn't say he won't fall. He says who is holding the light.

You don't have to rebuild the whole thing this week. You don't have to know what the house looks like yet.

Pick up one thing tomorrow. One. The call you've been ducking, the meeting, the first honest prayer in months. Do that one, then go to bed.

Day two is coming whether you feel ready for it or not. He'll be there for it. He was there for this one.

I'll be doing the same.

If you don't have the words, borrow mine

Father, it's day one again, and I'm tired of day ones.

You know exactly how I got here. The part that was done to me and the part I did. I'm not sorting out which is which tonight. But the part I did was sin, whatever percentage of this was mine, and I'm asking You to forgive that now. The accounting can wait until I can see straight.

I don't have a plan. I've got one thing I can do tomorrow, and I'll do that one.

The ground under me didn't move. It was never my footing anyway, it was Yours, bought and paid for by Your Son. Help me believe that before I feel it.

If I'm Yours, hold on to me. If I have never actually been Yours, make me Yours tonight.

Amen.

— Jake

Also for the man who is tired, or angry.

If this hit home, write me. I read every message.
