What You're Watching Is Discipling You
Three of every four men in the pew, and nobody says the word.
Three out of every four men in your church looked at porn this month. That is not a guess, and it is not the world. It is the pew. Barna put the number at 75 percent of Christian men, up eleven points in eight years, climbing while everyone pretends it is a fringe problem for weak men. It is not fringe. It is the row you are sitting in. And most pastors will preach forty Sundays a year and never once say the word out loud.
So let me say it. Pornography. And let me say the thing under it that no one tells you. You are not struggling with it. You are being discipled by it.
Every night you open that, you are sitting under a teacher. It is training you: what a woman is for, what your eyes are owed, what to do with a hard day, how to be alone. It is forming your appetites the way a coach forms a body, one rep at a time, and it never takes a night off. You think you are just looking. You are being shaped. A man becomes what he feeds his eyes, and yours have been in school for years.
Jesus did not treat it as small. "But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:28). Already. Before you touched anyone, before you did the thing you would call the real sin, He says it is already done in the one room you thought was private. He moved the line from the bed to the eyes, because He knows a man is built from the inside out, and what runs the inside runs the man.
An older and better man knew the fix, and it was not a filter app. "I have made a covenant with my eyes; How then could I gaze at a virgin?" (Job 31:1). A covenant. Job did not manage his looking. He made a binding vow about it, drew a hard line his eyes were not allowed to cross, and treated his own gaze as a thing that had to be governed like a border. That is the posture of a serious man. Not I will try to cut back. I have made a covenant with my eyes.
And here is the ground it stands on, the same ground under your marriage. "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Not your own. The God who lives in you was there in the dark too, and the price He paid for that body was His own Son. That is what you have been handing to a screen.
Now hear the other half, because shame is not the gospel and a beaten man quits. If that number is you, you are not uniquely disgusting. You are one of three-quarters of the men around you, and the God who saw all of it did not walk away. There is no sin here too deep for the blood that already covered it. But grace is not a reason to stay. It is the power to leave. You do not white-knuckle your way out of this. You drag it into the light, you tell another man the truth, you cut off the access like a man cutting off a limb to live, and you let the One who bought the body have it back.
The pulpit may stay quiet. I will not. This is the sin doing the most damage to the most men in the room, and the first step out is the one nobody wants to take. Say it is real. Say it out loud, to God and to one man who can walk with you. What grows in the dark dies in the light, and you were never meant to fight this alone or ashamed.
