A Church That Can't Offend You Can't Save You
A gospel with nothing left to cut you has nothing left to save you.
A church opened down the road with good coffee and better lighting. The band is tight. The seats are comfortable. The man on stage is warm and funny, and he has not said one thing in six months that would cost you a friendship if you repeated it at work. People love it. It is packed. And it cannot save a single one of them.
Here is the trade that church made. It looked at the parts of the gospel that offend a modern man, sin, hell, repentance, blood, a cross, and it filed the edge off every one. Not denied them. Just stopped mentioning them. Sin became brokenness. Repentance became growth. Hell went quiet. The blood got swapped for a God who mostly wants you to feel seen. What is left is warm and true-ish and it asks nothing of you, and a gospel that asks nothing of you cannot give you anything either.
Paul saw it coming with frightening accuracy. "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths" (2 Timothy 4:3-4). Read who does the accumulating. Not the false teachers. The people. They go and collect teachers who will say the soft thing, because the true thing stung. The itch came first. The tickler just showed up to scratch it. That is a market, and a lot of churches are only giving the market what it asked for.
And here is why it is not harmless. A gospel has to cut before it can heal. The whole thing turns on a wound: you are a sinner, you are under judgment, you cannot fix it, and Christ died in your place. Take out the cut and the healing has nothing to close. A doctor who will not tell you that you are sick because the word upsets you is not kind. He is a coward in a white coat, and you will die comfortable.
Hear what Jesus says to the church that went lukewarm to keep the peace. "I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth" (Revelation 3:15-16). Sit in that. He would rather you be cold than lukewarm. Hot or cold, at least you are something, at least you are of some use. It is the room-temperature church, the one that kept just enough Jesus to feel Christian and cut everything that might convict, that turns His stomach. That is the softest church in the book getting the hardest sentence in it.
None of this is a call to be harsh. A church can be gentle and true at the same time. Jesus was. He was tender with the woman they threw at His feet and He still told her to go and sin no more. Both. The gentleness without the command is not a kinder Jesus. It is half of one. And half of Jesus cannot save you any more than half a rope can hold you.
So test the church you sit in, and test it by what it is willing to lose. Will the man on the stage say the thing that empties a few seats? Will he name a sin the culture is celebrating this month? Will he tell you, to your face, kindly, that you must repent? If the answer is no, if that church has arranged itself so that no one ever has to be uncomfortable, then it has arranged itself so that no one ever has to be saved.
You do not need a church that makes you feel good about a life headed off a cliff. You need one that loves you enough to grab your arm. A church that cannot offend you cannot warn you, and a church that cannot warn you cannot save you. Find one with the nerve to tell you the truth. It is the only kind that has anything to give.
