What Is the Gospel? The Plainest Answer a Man Ever Got
You have heard the word your whole life. Gospel. It is painted on the sign out front. It is in the songs you half-know. People say it like you already understand what is inside the box.
Most men never got it opened. They got a feeling instead. Be good. Try harder. Straighten up. God is watching and mostly disappointed. They stacked a whole religion on that, and it broke their back, because that was never the gospel. That was self-improvement with a cross drawn on it.
So here it is, plain. No church voice, no throat-clearing.
The word means news. Not advice. News. Advice is a list of things you have to go do. News is a report that something already happened, and it happened whether you were in the room or not. If a man pays off your mortgage while you are asleep, that is not a tip for better budgeting. It is a fact you wake up into. The gospel is that kind of word. Something was done. Your job is not to do it. Your job is to hear it and believe it.
But you cannot hear good news until you have heard the bad. So take the bad first, straight.
You have measured yourself against the man next to you your whole life. That is the wrong ruler. The standard is not your neighbor. It is God, and He is holy, and Scripture does not round it off: "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Not most. All. The good days do not cover it.
One verse holds the whole thing, both halves, and most men have only ever felt the first. "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23). Start with the wage. Death. That is what your record earns, and no amount of trying harder next week pays it down, any more than doing better this month erases last month's crime. That is the debt. Hold the second half of that verse for a minute. We are coming back to it.
Most men feel this even when they cannot name it. The low hum that says you are not right, not clean, not enough. That hum is not a lie. It is the first true thing.
Now the news.
God did not wait for you to climb up. He came down. "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). Read it again. While you were still in it. Not after you cleaned up. In the middle of the mess. He lived the life you could not live, kept the law you keep breaking, and took the death you had earned and died it in your place. Paul lays the whole thing out in one breath: "that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). A death that counted for you. A grave that could not hold Him.
There is a trade underneath it that most men never hear. "He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him" (2 Corinthians 5:21). Your sin went to Him. His righteousness comes to you. He got treated like the guilty man so you could be treated like the clean one.
And when the work was done, He said so. Hanging there, He said, "It is finished!" (John 19:30). Not I am finished. The work. The debt. The word He used was the word for an account settled, nothing left owing.
The grave did not keep Him either. "He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification" (Romans 4:25). The empty tomb is not a bonus to the story. It is the receipt. God raising Him is God signing off on the payment: accepted, cleared, done.
So how does it get to you? Not by earning it. If you could earn it, He would not have had to die for it. "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Faith is not one more thing you achieve. It is not a feeling you gin up. It is the empty hand. It is a drowning man letting go of the water and grabbing the rope. You repent, which means you quit running your own rescue and turn around, and you trust that what Christ did is enough. Not enough plus your effort. Just enough.
It is not saying a magic sentence once at a camp and never thinking about it again. It is not being a decent guy who does not bother anybody. It is not getting your life together and then showing up presentable. You do not clean yourself to get rescued. You call for help while you are still going under.
Now go back to the half of that verse we left. The free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. One side you earned. The other side He bought.
So here is the whole thing, brother. You are worse off than you feared. And you are more loved than you dared hope. Both are true at the same time, and the cross is where they meet. The debt you have been trying to pay for years is either still yours or it is paid. The gospel says it is paid. If it is paid, you can stop paying it.
That is the news. Now you have heard it.
