How a Man of Christ Stands in the Culture War
Not the coward who blends in. Not the combatant who rages. The watchman who will not move.
There are two easy ways for a Christian man to lose the culture war, and most men pick one of them without noticing. The first is to blend in. Go quiet. Keep your convictions private, laugh at the jokes, never be the guy who makes it awkward, and slowly become indistinguishable from the world you were supposed to be different from. The second is to become a combatant. Get loud, get mean, treat every disagreement like a war and every person who disagrees like an enemy, and mistake your own anger for holiness. Both feel like the only options. Both lose. There is a third way, and it is the only one that is actually Christian.
Stand. Do not blend in, and do not blow up. Stand.
The man of Christ holds a line the coward abandons and the combatant weaponizes. The whole difference between him and the other two is not how strong his convictions are. It is how he carries them.
Hear the posture Peter commands, because it holds both halves in one sentence. "but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence" (1 Peter 3:15). Read it whole. Always ready to make a defense, that is the spine. You do not go silent, you do not hide the truth to keep the peace. Yet with gentleness and reverence, that is the manner. You do not swing the truth like a club. Both. The coward keeps the gentleness and drops the defense. The combatant keeps the defense and drops the gentleness. The man of Christ refuses to trade either one away.
Paul says the same thing to a man who leads. "The Lord's bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition" (2 Timothy 2:24-25). Not quarrelsome. A man who loves a fight for its own sake, who scrolls looking for someone to own, is not doing the Lord's work no matter how right he is. And yet, correcting those in opposition. He still corrects. He still holds the line. He just does it as a man and not as a troll.
So here is the first rule of standing. Aim at the lie, not the person. The culture war is a war of ideas and of the powers behind them, and the person in front of you, the one who believes the lie, is not the enemy. He is the casualty. You do not win him by humiliating him. You tell him the truth, and you tell it the way you would want it told to you, and you leave the door open. Jesus wept over the very city that was about to kill Him. He never once softened the truth for Jerusalem, and He never once stopped loving it. That is the model. Hard on the lie. Tender toward the man caught in it.
And know which fights are which, because not every hill is a hill. On the things God actually settled, the gospel, sin, the plain truth of His Word, you hold the line and you do not move, whatever it costs. But on the thousand disputable things, the preferences and styles and gray areas God left to a man's own conscience, you hold your peace, not the line. Wisdom is knowing the difference. A man who fights every battle at the same volume is not brave. He is just exhausting, and he has taught everyone watching that his convictions are all noise and no weight.
Then there is the part the combatant forgets and the coward never learns. Your life argues louder than your words. Peter again: "Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation" (1 Peter 2:12). You will not win the culture by being the angriest man in the comment section. You win it the slow way, by being a man whose life the world cannot explain, who loves his wife, keeps his word, works hard, tells the truth, and does not rage, until the very people who called him a bigot have to admit there is something in him they cannot account for.
None of this is a call to go soft on the truth. Jude tells us to "contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints" (Jude 3). Contend. Earnestly. There is a real fight and a real enemy and real lies eating real people, and a man who will not stand in it is not gentle. He is a coward with a nice excuse. But contend is not the same as quarrel, and earnestly is not the same as angrily. You can fight hard and fight clean at the same time. Christ did.
So here is the whole of it, for the man trying to be faithful in a culture at war with his God. Do not blend in. Salt that lost its bite is good for nothing. Do not blow up. The man who rages has already lost the argument to his own flesh. Stand. Hold the line God drew, tell the truth with a straight face and a soft heart, aim at the lie and love the person, let your life carry the weight your words cannot, and refuse to move.
That is not the coward's peace or the combatant's war. It is the watchman's post. Stand your watch.
