Are You Praying Wrong?
Yeah, I said it. You can pray wrong.
Most men do. Not evil, not faithless, just wrong. We almost dial it in. We check the boxes and say amen. We treat prayer like a list that has to get done so we can say we did it. You list your sins. You list your needs. You say amen. And you leave.
Let me say this plain. That is not devotion. That is you running your mouth before God gets a word in, because somewhere down deep you already know what He might say if you shut up long enough to hear it. So you keep it short. You keep it moving. You file the report and you get out before it gets personal.
That is not prayer. That is a status update.
And you do not have to take my word for it. Jesus said it first, and harder.
"And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him."
Matthew 6:7 through 8, NASB 1995
Read the last line. Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. So the whole shopping list you rattle off, the needs, the sins, the same words in the same order every night, He already knows all of it. You are not informing Him. He is not up there taking notes, waiting for the report so He can finally act. He knew before you opened your mouth. Which means the list was never the point. You were.
The only thing God ever wanted from your prayer was you.
Not your information. Not your performance. Not a well-organized briefing on your week. You. Your actual presence, sitting with Him, honest, unhurried, with nothing to prove and nothing to hide. That is what He has been after the whole time, and it is the one thing the checklist prayer never gives Him, because the checklist is built to get you out of the room fast.
So it is time to start praying like a man instead of a kid whose parents are making him do it before bed. Time to quit treating the most important conversation available to a human being like a chore you want off your plate.
Here is what that looks like, and it is going to feel strange at first because it is the opposite of everything you have been doing.
Sit down. Say nothing. Just be there for a minute before you start filling the air. If your mind wanders, and it will, do not quit, just bring it back. When the racing starts, and it will, you do not have to fight it with more words. Just say His name. Jesus. And come back.
Then talk to Him. Out loud, if you can. Like you are talking to your best friend, because you are, and best friends do not read each other reports. Be honest. Brutally, unimpressively honest, because He already knows all of it anyway and the pretending is only ever for you. Tell Him the real thing. The fear you would not say to another man. The sin you keep dressing up. The thing you are actually angry about. He can take it, and He has been waiting for you to stop performing and just tell Him the truth.
He does not want the lame report. He wants the man.
So do not wait. Do not save this for church or for some better version of you that has it together. Do it right now, wherever you are reading this. In the truck. On the couch. In the bathroom with the door shut because it is the only quiet you get. Right there.
Close your eyes. Slow your breathing down. Every time your mind takes off running, just say Jesus and come back. Then pray out loud. Talk to God like He is your best friend sitting right there, because He is. Be honest with Him. He already knows every bit of it. He is not waiting for new information. He is waiting for you.
God has been waiting a long time for that time with you. Longer than you know. So right now, before you close this and get pulled back into the day, give it to Him. Not the list. You.
It will be the most important part of your day. It might be the most important part of your year. Go.
