Kill the "it's not X, it's Y" cliché. And five other AI tells.

Buyers can spot AI-written copy now. The owner voice that wins is the one that doesn't sound generated.

Read enough AI-generated content and you'll spot the tic. "It's not a tool, it's a teammate." "It's not marketing, it's storytelling." "It's not about AI, it's about people." The frame is so overused that it now reads as a tell. The smart readers in your audience clock it as machine-written.

This isn't just one phrase. It's a whole category of writing AI loves because the formulas sound profound without saying anything testable. Cut them.

Other tells to remove from your copy

"In today's fast-paced world." Generic, machine-y, says nothing. Replace with the actual circumstance: "Most owners I talk to are running on 4 hours of sleep this week."

"Synergy." Stop. There is no situation in which a customer of yours has ever used this word.

Em-dashes used three times in a paragraph. They're not wrong, but AI overuses them and trained-eye readers notice. Use commas, colons, or split the sentence.

"Unlock," "leverage," "harness," "empower," "elevate," "transform" used as transitive verbs against abstractions. "Unlock your potential." "Leverage your data." Cut them all and rewrite.

"As we navigate" anything, especially "as we navigate the rapidly changing landscape."

The fix

Read your own copy out loud. If it sounds like the LinkedIn algorithm wrote it, your customer will feel it too. The owner voice that wins in 2026 is the one that doesn't sound generated.

Concretely: take the last three things you wrote with AI assistance. Read them out loud. Cut every phrase that triggers an internal "ugh." Replace with what you'd actually say to a customer over coffee. You'll lose 15% of the word count and gain all of the trust.

Why this matters more this year than last

Until 2025, average AI-written copy was bad enough that buyers couldn't always tell. In 2026 they can. They have an immune response to it. If your marketing reads as generated, you lose before you've made the argument.

The owner voice (specific, contrarian, honest, with skin in the game) is now a real competitive advantage. Use AI to draft. Use your ear to cut.
